Youth Development Through Sport
Youth development through sport creates opportunities for young people to stay active, build confidence, develop practical skills and become more connected to their communities. ALZAHRA Sport International Society brings sport together with education, mentorship, leadership development and community participation. Young people, parents, volunteers and partners can explore available opportunities or help make inclusive youth programs accessible to more participants.
01
WHY IT MATTERS
Why Youth Development Through Sport Matters
Sport can be much more than physical activity. In a supportive environment, it can give young people space to communicate, solve problems, practise responsibility and work towards shared goals.
Positive youth development focuses on recognising the abilities young people already have while helping them build the skills and relationships needed for the future. Participation can create opportunities to experience teamwork, manage challenges, make decisions and understand the value of commitment.
ALZAHRA uses sport as a starting point for wider personal and community development. The objective is not limited to athletic performance. It is to help young people participate, discover their strengths and find meaningful pathways into learning, leadership and community life.
THE DEVELOPMENT TRACK
How ALZAHRA Supports Young People
ALZAHRA’s approach connects youth sports programs with opportunities for learning, mentorship and personal development. Activities should be designed around the ages, circumstances and goals of participants while providing clear information about eligibility, location, registration and availability.
01
Sport and Active Living
Sport and physical activity can encourage healthier routines while helping young people develop teamwork, discipline and confidence. Inclusive and beginner-friendly activities can allow participants to develop ability at their own pace without feeling defined by previous experience.
02
Confidence and Life Skills
Life skills through sport can include communication, decision-making, resilience, time management and problem-solving. Young people can practise these abilities during activities and apply them in education, volunteering, relationships and everyday situations.
03
Youth Leadership Development
Young people should have opportunities to express their ideas and take meaningful responsibility. ALZAHRA connects its youth work with leadership development programs that can help participants progress from joining an activity to supporting teammates, organising initiatives or contributing to community decisions.
04
Mentorship and Positive Relationships
Youth mentorship programs can connect participants with supportive adults, community leaders and positive role models. Effective mentorship should listen to young people, respect their experiences and help them explore their interests rather than deciding their future for them.
05
Education and Skills Development
Youth skills development may involve workshops, practical learning, volunteering and community projects. These opportunities can help participants discover their abilities, explore future pathways and become more confident when navigating education, employment and community life.
06
Community Engagement
Young people are not only future leaders. They can make valuable contributions today. Youth community engagement creates opportunities to volunteer, participate in local initiatives and help shape activities that affect their lives.
ACCESS + BELONGING
Creating Inclusive Youth Programs
Not every young person begins with the same access, experience or support network. Newcomer and refugee youth may also encounter language barriers, unfamiliar systems, social isolation or difficulty finding activities where they feel welcome.
Inclusive youth programs should recognise these differences without defining participants only by the barriers they face. Activities should provide safe ways to participate, build relationships and contribute personal ideas and experiences.
ALZAHRA’s refugee and newcomer inclusion programs complement this work by connecting sport, wellness and community participation. This approach can help young people form friendships, strengthen their sense of belonging and become more connected to their communities.
PARTICIPATE → CONTRIBUTE → LEAD
From Participation to Youth Leadership
A young person may first join a program to become active, meet people or try something new. With encouragement and appropriate opportunities, that first step can develop into regular participation, volunteering, peer support or leadership.
Sports-based youth development works best when progress is not measured only by attendance or competition. Confidence gained, skills developed, relationships formed, responsibilities accepted and community involvement can all demonstrate meaningful progress.
ALZAHRA aims to create pathways through which young people can move from participation to contribution. Visitors can review ALZAHRA’s reported community impact to learn more about the organisation’s wider sport-for-development work from Afghanistan to Canada.
VOICE + CHOICE + SUPPORT
Building Stronger Futures Through Youth Empowerment
Youth empowerment programs should allow young people to be heard, respected and involved in decisions affecting their participation. Giving young people responsibility does not mean leaving them without guidance. It means combining appropriate support with genuine opportunities to make choices and learn through experience.
Families, mentors, volunteers and community organisations also have an important role. By working together, they can help create environments where young people feel safe to participate, learn from setbacks and recognise their potential.
