Our History

ALZAHRA Sport International Society began as a bold vision to create safe and empowering opportunities for women and girls through sport. Founded in Afghanistan in 2009 by **Masooma Sayed Hashim**, the organization emerged at a time when women’s participation in sport was extremely limited. What started as one of the country’s first women-led sport initiatives quickly grew into a respected organization promoting leadership, education, health, and community development through sport.

From Local Impact to Global Recognition

Between **2009 and 2015**, ALZAHRA pioneered women’s sport development in Afghanistan by establishing one of the first women’s sport complexes, developing coaching and leadership programs, organizing national competitions, and partnering with international organizations to advance gender equality and social inclusion.
Following relocation to Canada, the organization continued its mission under the name **ACSA Cultural & Sport Association** from **2019 to 2026**. During this period, ALZAHRA successfully delivered more than **40 sport-for-development programs** supporting women, youth, refugees, newcomers, seniors, and underserved communities across British Columbia through partnerships with leading national organizations and government agencies.
As its international impact continued to grow, the organization officially rebranded in **2026** as **ALZAHRA Sport International Society**, reconnecting with its original identity while expanding its global vision. Today, ALZAHRA is recognized as a refugee-led international nonprofit organization using sport, martial arts, wellness, education, leadership, and innovation to create lasting social change.
